Great Minds

Great minds discuss IDEAS;
Average minds discuss EVENTS;
Small minds discuss PEOPLE.

     ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Let’s apply this quote to drinking.

I guess the average drinker drinks in the company of friends most of the time, and reckons they are having a ‘good time’. In my experience, though, most of what is said whilst under the influence doesn’t carry much weight.

It may serve to bond people who share stuff they wouldn’t normally offer up for public consumption. But much of the time we’re either talking crap or putting down PEOPLE we work or live with who aren’t present. In what’s left of my mind I can’t remember great, epoch-changing revelations which have come from my excessive drinking. Other than that I’m an idiot.

Those who discuss EVENTS are basically living their lives as best they can. Not particularly downers but not particularly sparkling either. Which is fine. By definition the ‘average’ is the mid-point of all the extremes. And although we are all different, quite a few of us are just that: average. I’ve never aspired to this accolade, mind you, but drinking isn’t known for elevating us much in this respect, even if we kid ourselves otherwise.

Then there are the so-called ‘great minds’ of the quote. Those who apparently discuss IDEAS. Now this is where I start to have a bit of a problem. You see, much of my drinking has been solitary, and I often spend this time working on poetry, my web sites or planning my brilliant future between swigs. But if booze was so brilliant, wouldn’t I also be, well, brilliant by now? Which I’m not. And beer and wine has a lot to do with that.

I love ideas, I’m always having them. But I love people too. Only I don’t have many in my life. Drinking was a social event for me at the start but for many years it’s been entirely the opposite. I have no friends, even though I’m a nice guy. I barely have a family. My great ideas fall on stony ground. All thanks to booze.

So from now on I’m committed to discussing exciting things with other like-minded souls, not gossiping about PEOPLE. That’s small-minded thinking.

I’m interested in EVENTS, sure, but I’m not going to live my life beating myself up over tragedies on the other side of the world I can’t do anything about or some TV star’s latest haircut. That’s average-mind thinking.

From now on I’m going to discuss big IDEAS, like creating cool stuff and helping people out as I develop some real friendships at last. That’s great-mind thinking. Are you on-board?
