After Work Whining

I remember going for after-work drinks a long, long time ago, in another life, when I worked in the City of London, believe it or not.

It was for a computer company which supplied ‘solutions’ to the financial institutions established there.

I didn’t fit in, but drink doesn’t worry about that, and sure, after a few, the trials and tensions of the day would recede a little.

They were salesmen when it came down to it, even if the product was technical. They were a materialistic bunch. You were judged on the make of your tie and the brand of your car, the size of your mortgage and the cut of your cuff-links.

And on how stupidly drunk you could get after work and still laugh it off in the morning.

I left after a couple of years to train as a water sports instructor. Of course we’d go for after-wave drinks.

In more recent years I’ve taught English abroad. Where we’d go for after-class drinks. Am I starting to see a pattern here..?

It reminds me of that joke that goes: If you drink vodka and ice, you get kidney failure; if you drink rum and ice, you get liver failure; if you drink whisky and ice you get heart failure. Enough is enough! I’m giving up that damn ice tomorrow…
