The Old Devil

“I believe booze is different. Very different. People don’t usually lose their jobs or their families or their livers or their lives because of Game of Thrones induced chocoholism. You see, the bitter truth is: You don’t abuse alcohol; alcohol abuses you!“

Those last seven words above – “You don’t abuse alcohol; alcohol abuses you!” – make up one of my absolute favourite booze-related comments and one of the most powerful too.

I understand it’s not particularly scientific, but sometimes po-faced scientific facts can roll off a drinker’s back like pee down a plughole. Sayings and proverbs exist for a reason: they strike a chord and they stick.

What this expression is saying is that it’s not our fault we have a drinking problem. We weren’t born craving a fix (unless our mother treated us to umbilically delivered tipples, for which we may be forever indebted, but that’s another story).

No, what really happened was that we had a thirst for booze thrust upon us. By family, by friends, by society, by the very so-called upright pillars of convention we live our lives by.

The celebratory champagne at the wedding or after a blistering business deal. The Christmas whisky or sherry. The regular Friday night down the pub with the lads (or lassies). The usual suspects.

What we didn’t realise at the time, and for ages afterwards, was that we had fallen into a terrible, pitiless and ultimately deadly trap. But it wasn’t our fault. We didn’t abuse alcohol; it abused us.

Realising that can be a very powerful first step on the way to getting our lives back.
