All Fools’ Day

We want you to be able to go to that party, captain the pub quiz team, head off on that long weekend…. But we want you to be able to do it alcohol free!

~ from the Alcohol Concern website

There are quite a few stop-drinking-for-a-while schemes out there, such as the Alcohol Concern website’s ‘Dry January’ campaign. Another common theme is ‘Sober October’ but I don’t know if it’s linked to any particular organisation. This is all well and good.

With Alcohol Concern’s effort, you even get sponsored to raise money for your favourite charity and are encouraged to get your friends and colleagues to join in.

Still well and good? Well yes and no. Of course it’s good to raise awareness of alcohol problems and encourage people to cut down for a while. The problem I have, though, is that the focus is very much on stopping for a while and then (by implication) starting right back up again where you left off.

And often – here comes the sting in the tail – when you’ve voluntarily given up for a while you start back up again with a renewed sense of control and power. You’ve shown you can do it and you’ve proven to yourself and others that you don’t have a problem.

So why is this so bad? Because you now have no obvious reason or motivation to give up or cut down again, until some other ‘fun’ challenge comes along a few months (or years) down the line. So you go on drinking. And we know where that leads. Our old friend Alcohol’s laughing all the way to the bank / hospital / divorce court / dole office / morgue.

There’s one other bit of inherent evil in these ‘worthy’ initiatives. They make alcohol drinking ok, fine, doable and manageable. Normal. Banal. And accepted part of our daily lives. Once again society brushes under the carpet the unfortunate fact that we are all slaves to a lethal, highly addictive drug.
