“I went out with a guy who once told me I didn’t need to drink to make myself more fun to be around. I told him, I’m drinking so that you’re more fun to be around.“
~ Chelsea Handler
OK, so this is a funny quote from a well-known comedienne and influential personality (she’s on lots of ‘100 Most…’ lists), but there’s something to be gleaned from her words.
Do we drink to make ourselves more interesting or the be able to tolerate the uninterestingness of others? It’s a good question.
I guess we often drink to feel more relaxed and consequently become less inhibited. We often end up ‘letting it all hang out’, of course, which isn’t such a good look, but there you go.
So, we drink booze, get tipsy or drunk, and then what? Are we, in fact, ‘more fun to be around’? Possibly, but also possibly only if the people you are with are drinking too. In which case does that really count? If you are all at the same level of wooziness, then maybe none of you needed to get drunk in the first place.
And do others seem more fun to be around when we’re chugging them down? Well who knows? We certainly don’t because we’re diving headlong into our own little sloshed up universe. Nice one Chelsea!
