Don’t get me started on drinks ads! It’s purely and simply the legal dealing in lethal drugs to the general and oh-so-vulnerable population including, of course, our kids.
The latter, our innocent, impressionable babies, are particularly juicy targets, because they represent a lifetime of sordid sales of their addictive product if they can just… get… them… to try it. Get them hooked, in other words.
I have limitless admiration for the invention of booze publicity and a deep disgust for the product they’re peddling and their disingenuousness in doing so. They’re lying bastards, in other words.
They try to make us think that drinking their poison will transport us magically to some Caribbean island where all our problems and worries evaporate in a blur of beautiful people and good times.
At best we’ll get away with a lighter wallet and mild sunburn. At worst we’ll drown in the pool.
I have a little hobby of counting ads for alcohol in train stations and in newspapers given out freely here in Paris where I live. They’re everywhere. In a random free paper there will be three booze ads:
=> one for a trendy beer (Hook: Watch out, I’m a daring desperado!)
=> one for a lovingly lethal spirit (Hook: Cold-filtered through three metres of charcoal – err, yum?)
=> one for champagne (Hook: Win a year’s worth of bubbly brain rot)
