Help Others, Help Yourself

Inspiring others is a great motivator. It’s the driving force behind these Daily Doses and the whole Drunken Dodo website.

Of course, you could be cynical and say, yeah, but you’re only trying to help others to feel good about yourself and seem like a worthy fellow.

I actually agree with that, but in the end I don’t think it really matters either way.

If we are driven to do general good by an inbuilt need to fit in and be accepted as a useful and important part of our society or peer group, then so be it. If it gets the job done, then do it.

Because, of course, the truth is we all leave this world eventually. As we get older, we start to realise that maybe chasing after yet another flash car or huger mortgage or pointless promotion isn’t the be all and end all.

We start to think that it would be kind of nice to not have our daughter hate us any more for all the crap we dealt them as kids. Perceived happiness changes and priorities shift.

They say that you can’t truly love someone else if you’re not at peace with yourself. That makes sense to me.

It also seems like a cool approach to help yourself out of difficulty through helping others. Hence Drunken Dodo.

It’s my therapy. I couldn’t for one second pretend to be inspiring others to beat the booze if I was still knocking them back. So I believe that selflessness grows out of selfishness.

They say that the best way of learning something is to teach it to others. I’m trying to educate others about alcohol in an accessible way in order to learn more about alcohol myself. Because the more I learn about alcohol, the more I understand what’s going on inside my own head too. It’s as simple as that.​
