In the French press this week is a story about possible new drink-driving laws. And this time it’s serious.
One article started thus:
Zero tolerance: for the driving association ’40 Million Motorists’, one glass of alcohol is already one too many. With its campaign ‘I’m a hero, I drive at zero’, the association is calling on drivers to demand a reduction in the maximum legal alcohol limit for driving.
It’s not before time and it’s not without merit, despite the many (already half drunk) drivers who foolishly believe they can drive fine with a couple of drinks inside them. Some even think it improves their driving, but that’s the drink talking.
Just this week there was an accident on the roads here in France. Let’s see if we can guess what the cause was. Four youngsters were killed driving home very late at night from a night club. Doesn’t take a genius to work that one out.
This is, literally, a weekly occurence, and although a ‘zero tolerance’ policy (and law) might seem draconian, on reflection I don’t see why it should. As usual it’s only society’s blinkers that are hiding the truth from level-headed citizens.
After all, how many glasses would you be happy with your heart surgeon having inside him, before he operated? Your banker reeking of booze? Your kid’s teacher cunningly tippling?
The truth is, any amount of alcohol starts to affect us – it’s a fast-acting, mood-morphing poison after all – and those consuming it are absolutely the least qualified to judge to what extent and how fast it is acting. Seems obvious really.
It would also make things much simpler – if you drive you don’t drink; don’t drink if you want to drive. Or you’ll go down. In as many ways as you can imagine. It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out.
