I lived in Australia for a year as a kid back in 1974-5 and I vaguely remember Native Australians being referred to as ‘Abbos’ and not being particularly well-treated. At that age I wasn’t aware of any alcohol-related problems though.
Now I am and it’s a huge and well-documented crisis in the Aboriginal community. A quick search for ‘grog’ – the Aussie slang for booze – reveals an eye-watering array of harrowing headlines right there on the first page:
The list goes on and on. The sad pictures of destitute drunks sprawled on the dirt by the side of the road too.
A thought flashed through my mind that this was a classic example of how those of limited resources and opportunities are affected the most by the devil drink. But then I thought ‘That’s rubbish!’.
You just have to think of all the stressed out business people and partying students and bored housewives and rich rock singers and movie stars who have been dragged down too to see how absurd that thought was, and how powerful the evil alcohol really is.
That’s one of its most powerful tricks. If you are wealthy, intelligent, educated, respected etc. etc. you don’t think you can possibly have a drink problem. You’re not down and out on the street, after all. Not for now.
No moral here, just a reminder: constant education and awareness of the reality of the situation is our strongest weapon. Never let your guard down. Know your enemy. Knowledge is power. Beat the grog!
