Routine Success

 

You will never change your life
until you change something you do daily.

There are a thousand variations on this theme, and with good reason: they’re right!

This idea that the only time you can actually change anything is right now is found throughout self-help and success literature and burblings. Because it’s true.

We might as well stop kidding ourselves and accept what’s obvious: if you aren’t in the process of changing bad behaviours right now, then you’re not changing bad behaviours. Full stop, period!

Example: You’re gonna get fit and lose a few kilos. Right after you’ve finished those last few pizzas lurking in the freezer. Oh, and that stock of Häagen-Dazs you got last weekend.

Hello! You ain’t getting fit or skinny yet. Maybe you will sometime in the future, who knows. But right now you’re staying right where you are.

Another Example: You’re gonna get outta debt and back in control of your finances. Right after that exotic holiday you’re been promising yourself because you deserve it. Oh, and that credit deal on a new car looks mighty tempting…

Hello again! You ain’t getting outta anything just yet. Maybe it’s retail therapy. Maybe it’s fear. Maybe it’s pure and simple irresponsibility. But whatever it is, if you’re not spending less and paying off debts you’re staying right where you are.

Final Example: You’re gonna give up smoking and quit drinking. Say ‘Hello!’ to the new you! Right after you cough your way through that carton of cigarettes you got yesterday and the 6-packs in the fridge.

Hello same old you! You still ain’t giving up anything as long as you’re dragging and swigging for all you’re worth.

Another thundering cliché is that today is the first day of the rest of your life. One of those ‘first days’ will also be your last. Today is the only day you can actually do anything about anything.

All that’s kind of negative. And I hate negativity. So here’s something positive: when you actually really do start to change, and you know the change is taking place, it feels WONDERFUL!

Sometimes it’s hard to know when or even if you’ve actually given up. Which is why a highly symbolic End of (Drinking) Days point is such a powerful concept and one of the mainstays of my 7 Days To Sober programme.
