“If you are concerned you have a problem with alcohol there is lots of help available.
Your GP is a good place to start and can help you figure out if you should make any changes in your drinking and offer help and advice along the way.“
~ from the Drinkaware website
This sounds like obvious advice from the excellent Drinkaware website, but it’s not as easy as it seems.
Not as easy, (you may ask)? What’s not easy about making an appointment with your friendly local doc and breezing in saying ‘Oh, hi Doc, I think I’m alcoholic, what should I do?’
Unfortunately, a lot of factors stop us from taking this simple step, often for many years.
You see, we desperately fool ourselves, even subconsciously. We just don’t want to even entertain the idea that we might have a problem.
There is a huge social stigma attached to having a drinking ‘problem’, even as we are smitten into submission by booze ads, invitations to parties and alcohol-drenched conferences and dos of various kinds as we live and breathe.
The pressure to drink is immense. And going to the doctor about it is a clear indication that we have some sort of ‘problem’ or concern at least. And we don’t like this. What if our family finds out? Or our boss? Heck, we don’t even want the doctor to know!!!
But that is the doctor’s job: to keep us well. They won’t judge, and you certainly won’t be the first person worried about drinking they’ve come across.
So as an excellent, positive first step, see your doc. He or she will give you a valuable first reaction and, if there is a concern, point you in the right direction.
Even if you decide to follow a programme my 7 Days To Sober, a visit to your doctor is highly recommended – get people involved: the more (people you have on your team), the merrier!
