Here’s a sickly sad story from people.com. The headline reads: “Teen Dies of Alcohol Poisoning After His Parents Allegedly Tried to Teach Him a Lesson About Drinking”.
Shit.
Seems two Wyoming parents were so worried about their 16-year-old son becoming an alcoholic like his biological father before him.
So they plied him with booze and he ended up with a .578 blood-alcohol level, the legal limit for driving being .08. And dead.
Apparently his step-father thought he was doing a good thing, following advice to ‘teach his son a lesson’ and get him so drunk he’d never want to do it again.
It could have gone both ways I guess. Drinking too much is all part of the terrible trap. You swear you’ll never drink again after a brain-bashing hangover… until the next time booze comes along and off you go again.
Or it could go the way it did – an innocent teen far from ‘ready’ for that level of bodily abuse. I can’t even imagine what these ‘caring parents’ were thinking or must be thinking now.
What’s the best way of warning adolescents of the dangers of drink? I have no idea. But pouring alcohol down their throats probably isn’t one of them.
Personally, I’d go another route. Make them fully aware of the grave long-term dangers they are running; praise them for their intelligence; and make sure their lives are full of fun, fulfilling, non-alcohol related activities. And love.
