Brits on the Piss

Going on a ‘booze cruise’ is a popular British day out, and involves taking the ferry over to France and loading up the car with huge quantities of beer, wine, spirits and tobacco at prices which are around half those in the UK.

Wahay – Brits on the Piss! “Down-in-one, down-in-one, down-in-one…” they chant.

The image foreigners have of the English on a day out, and many other f*cked up holiday-makers for that matter, is not a very flattering one.

The last time I was on holiday in Barcelona the television news and the papers were full of one story: how European revellers – mainly British – were making life for the locals in a charming little part of the city next to the beach called Barceloneta absolute hell.

Google ‘Brits in Barceloneta’ and you’ll find tons of charming images like this one (Not Safe For Work!) which made front page headlines in the city. Apparently these jokers were actually Italian, for what it’s worth. The guys were out buying beer from the local supermarket I believe.

For some reason I never got into that scene or that sort of nonsense; mine was a much more down-to-earth morosity when it came to the booze.

But let this be a warning if you hold any sort of national pride dear to your heart which worries about lasting impressions left on innocent bystanders, be they lying on a beach in Balearic bliss or strolling down the Champs Elysées as sloshed Scots in pre-match prep confirm the rumours about what’s under their kilts… the pissed Brit abroad is not always a good look.

Some ladies on a certain famous French avenue may beg to differ… 😉
