“About 5,000 young people – under 21 – are killed by alcohol-related events, including but not restricted to car crashes, suicide, murders, alcohol poisoning and basic stupidity…“
~ from the Drunken Dodo Alcohol Facts FAQ
I can’t remember which country this was – probably England or the UK as a whole. What a tragedy.
The evil of alcohol is that it grabs us when we’re young, at our most innocent and naive. It’s a bit like the stuff really young kids hear from their parents and other ‘authority figures’ when they’re in their formative years. Stuff about religion, race, sexuality and what’s morally right.
Little kid’s don’t know what’s true or what’s sensible and what’s not. So they take it all on board and assume it’s right because their parents represent ‘wisdom’ as far as they’re concerned.
Once those initial ideas have been absorbed and anchored, it’s jolly hard to loosen their hold.
So it is with booze. If we haven’t grown up with it directly in the family, it won’t be long at all before it comes crashing into our lives, at university, at parties, at conferences and… on the motorway.
